It is important to realize that treatment for alcoholism is not just "getting the alcohol out of your system." Detoxification is only the beginning of treatment. It should be done in a "medical facility," but not necessarily a hospital. After the detox process is when the real treatment begins. This is often referred to as "rehab." The best treatment available today is an intense, structured, in-patient treatment program offered by various centers across the nation. The longer the treatment, the better chance of success. Treatment should include a thorough physical examination as well as counseling and group therapy. This should be a time where the person is removed from the present environment and everyday stresses that are involved in the alcohol use and the current situation. It is a time to restart and restructure your life so that is free of alcohol. Many times alcohol abuse is but a symptom of others problems. Once the alcohol is removed from the body, the person can start examining their life on life's terms. Counselors and other alcoholics can help people begin a life of sobriety. It is not something that can be done quickly or easily. Treatment provides a road map, so to speak, to help direct one's life in sobriety. |
